Waking up to a generous heaping of flakes outside your window is the ultimate joy for most kids. For adults, the ultimate pain. Slushy ice roads, congested tunnels, travel delays, detours, black ice, and arctic winds can make the morning/evening commute feel like waging a war against the elements. Yet, inside, peering out a steamy window, all is calm. A bit of this quiet introspection could do the commuter well, transporting him/her from the chaos of a congested underground tunnel to a mythologized they once dreamed of living when as a child. This mix was designed early this morning as an agent to take you to that special frozen place.

There is one tree left on the mighty Oak outside my window. Winds are humming up the East River, cutting through Greenpoint with Exacto knife precision. The sun goes down at 4:30 pm. Sick of the varying weather, we head North to a more serene destination, where the sun will melt into the horizon at 4:08 pm, the breeze out of the East will be from the Northern reaches of the Atlantic Ocean, and while conditions aren't exactly permitting, they seem more fitting than in the city, where the vital signs of season change are shrouded in concrete capes, keeping natural form at bay. The train ride to northern New England is approximately 8-9 hours from NY Penn Station. This mix will only last you through Westchester, maybe Southern Connecticut, if your lucky, either way, it'll put you in the right state of mind for Winter exploration and the enjoyment of the forthcoming season.

Ok, heres the plan: We're all going to quit our day jobs and shack up at my grandparent's beach house for the summer. (They're old and forgot they have a beach house.) Then we'll get sweet jobs like, Ice Cream Man, Italian Ice Guy, Fish Delivery Dude and Badge Checker Chick. We'll live off grilled cheese sandwiches and milkshakes. And margaritas. We'll have unlimited ice cream, and freeze pops. You can buy like 500 freezepops at the gas station for like $5. It's sick. We'll just wear Umbro's every day. No shoes. And it won't even matter when you jump into the ocean with your clothes on at 4 in the morning and your cell phone dies, cause, well, it just won't matter. And well ride bikes. It's gonna be so rad.

"Dreaming, Dreaming"
With the Greenpoint thermometer hitting upwards of 85 the past two weekends, it's safe to say that Summer is almost here. It's also safe to say that you can find me in the park, chilling with friends, soaking up sun and drinking Margarita's in styrofoam cups from the Turkey's Nest. My advice with this mix; burn a copy to CD, then transfer that CD to Maxell XL-II, pop it into your Radio Raheem-esque boom box, pick up a blanket and go lay out in your neighborhood park. Bring booze. Smokes. Buy an ice cream. (or Italian ice.) Stop being so pale.

"I Wanna Do Some Laughing Too"
If one were to awake from a sylvan daydream ala Rip Van Winkle, one would be able to hear and feel the world bursting with raw energy ("These Blues"). Moving through the forest, wide-eyed and romantic in the new world ("Bluish"), one begins to philosophize ("Fake Blues") and discovers he/she is all alone in the universe ("Baby, Don't Go", "Terrapin"). Self-examination kicks in ("It's Up to You"). And, ultimately, realization ("Moments in the Snow").

Awash in an existential whirlwind ("Whiteout"), one concludes that life is both sad and beautiful, yet doesn't care because it's much more fun to laugh and dance and sing ("Hellhole Ratrace"). Mental joy gives way to meditation and new-age soul searching ("The Good Humor Man He Sees Everything", "Karmic Dream Sequence #1"). Things are getting heavy, maaan ("Keep It Heavy"). But heavy is overwhelming. Good vibes much preferred ("Khala My Friend"). Alas, everything is new ("Everything's Big").

"Home I'll Never Be"
Wealth I seek not, hope nor love, Nor a friend to know me; All I seek, the heaven above, and the road below me Robert Louis Stevenson
Lonely, broke and desperate, yet brimming with optimism, the song of the great American highway is deeply ingrained in the psyche of anyone born from sea to shinning sea. Some say it's Manifest Destiny, others merely an idyllic hobo's dream. Whatever it is, it's easily felt on cold, dark nights on lonesome highways, heading off the grid, or to some fabled watering hole, or, simply, home, wherever, or whatever, that may be. As Gillian Welch once said, "I dream a highway."

"I Need Another World...This Ones Nearly Gone"
It's funny how a little bit of snow can bring a city to a stop. Aimless and carefree, it floats amongst smoke stacks and skyscrapers, lulling the avenues to a quiet hush. Quickly, it builds, hypnotizing wide-eyed onlookers as it dusts dirty streets with crystalline sparkles that shine under street lights like diamonds in a summer sky. Quiet. It swirls, whirls and falls. You stick your tongue out and taste its frozen delight. "Ahh, nurishment." And all of the sudden, the world is anew.

"Meet Me In The Garden"

After a bitter NYE we're more than ready to welcome warm, sunny afternoons back into our lives. While that certainly isn't going to happen anytime soon in Brooklyn, one can always dream. Inflatable kiddie pools, zinc on ye nose, old episodes of Magnum PI and a quick call to your most favorite delivery guy can prove a MacGuyver-like solution. After all, what else do you need to feel like your in Hawaii? OK, a cocktail would be nice. And maybe some spam and Reese's.

"Rosin Smells and Turpentine Smells From Eucalyptus and Pine"
Bitter tastes of twigs we chewed where tangled wood vines twine
Trees held us in on all four sides so thick we could not see
I could not see any wrong in you, and you saw none in me
- Woody Guthrie
Inspired by some of my favorite Woody Guthrie lyrics, and one of my favorite interpretations, "Bobkast #20: Tangled Wood Vines Twine" is a collection of live songs recorded around the world at legendary venues, radio stations, basements, theaters and beaches. Believe it or not this bobkast began with mostly new songs. In the end however, only the Rosebuds, Juana Molina, and Chad VanGaalen survived. It brings me great comfort to think that should the world turn out like Footloose or that goofy Queen musical, we've at least stockpiled enough good music to last us a few more years.

So in honor of all things fall (mainly snare brushes, sonic swelling, and acoustic rhythm intros) I bring you the 19th installation of The Bobkast. Take this one for the cold walk home on a windy November.

Bobkast #19: Where Do I Star, Where Do I Begin
Annuals - Brother
The Rosebuds - Hello Darling
Juana Molina - Vive Solo
Destroyer - European Oils

"Everything In Its Right Place"
Saturday nights inevitably end in someone's living room, fresh beers in hand and pizza boxes, with only a few crumbs that once amounted to a whole pie, strewn across coffee tables.

The process begins around two, sometimes earlier, when one feels the itch to 'get the hell out of where ever they are', but doesn't want to end their night with an Irish exit from some god foresaken bar. Idea! Rally likeminded troops and soldier on toward the closest corner store and the Pizza place (or Diner). Beer in one hand, 'za in the other, the herd moves toward a nearby apartment. They huddle around a dirty coffee table, TV on in the corner, some detective noir on mute. Smokes are smoked, 'za crushed,as brew soothes pizza burnt mouthes (or sits in the open bottle until said apt owner picks it up in the morning, sighs, and pours it down the drain).

Of course, there are tunes, perfect tunes that seem to breathe from barely lit walls. And dancing, on coffee tables, until legs get jello-y and eyes heavy, and the couch calls your name. You sit. Bite off a piece of half-chewed, totally burnt crust, wash it down with a lukewarm, soon-to-be-wounded soldier. You slowly drift off into the ether.

September 21 marks the Autumnal Equinox, which means this is your last chance in 2008 to successfully balance an egg on end. It also means the rolling green mountains of Vermont will erupt in technicolor magic, wool sweaters will return from moth ball covered chests in the corner of basements and pumpkin seeds will be salted and subsequently roasted. But the best part of fall is the way whiskey hits your warm belly on aimless jaunts through leaf plastered forests, bundled in flannel and wool. Oh yeah, and you in your autumn sweater.

Composed on an early fall flight from Idaho to LaGuardia, after a brief visit to Hell's Canyon, this mix is a subtle, woozy collection of songs that drift and float through both darkness and light, as if they were specks of rainbow dust that meander through the atmosphere only to occassionally brush up against your shirt and get you thinking about the size of the planet. After slowly emerging from the winter hibernation, there's no better way to embrace the joyousness of the rebirth season than by putting some life into your bones via raucous dance party in the sunshine. For the thirteenth edition of the Bobkast, we offer you a collection of beat-heavy tunes that we think sound just as good in the warm confines of Mother Nature as they do in the dark clubs where they originated.  Ranging from dirty disco funk to sleek and squeeky electro, this mix is an electronic celebration, ideal for working out the kinks to  your favorite dance moves (including the cabbage patch, running man, and egyptian strut), in anticipation of the summertime heat.

A mess of crayons always makes the best art. With that in mind, this mix is meant to transport you to a simpler time when you cared for nothing but chocolate chip cookies, Kool-Aid and magic markers. Think of it as an adult version of drawing on the wall, only less to cleanup. If that doesn't do it for ya, how about one of the songs being culled from a compilation called Waking Up Scheherazade: Arabian Psych Nuggets. Figured that'd get ya listening. Shazam.

To honor the recently-past 10 year anniversary of (one of) our favorite Phish era(s), we have assembled a few choice cuts from the Fall/Winter 1997 tour for your dancing and listening pleasure.  This segment of dirrty Cow Phunk mixed with spacey transcendental improv will remind even the most jaded of phans why they liked the band so much in the first place, and it is also a great starting point for newbies who want to get an idea of what the fuss was all about.  Check out LivePhish.com for more information.

A narcotic blend of insomniac drone, this mix was inspired by blunted late night drives down snow covered streets and is an attempt at blurring the lines between pop, sleek Italo disco, cavernous dubstep, luminary space rock, soulful hip hop and eerie folk. The glue is a psych aesthetic that permeates every track and covers this mix in a stoney haze.

Sleep driving is a habitual act insomniacs practice which transports the restless from the confines of sleeplessness into a calming world of nothingness. In the darkness of the open road one finds himself alone in desolate isolation, post-apocalyptic contemplation. "Is this the end? Am I the only one left? Shall I keep driving? Streetlights flicker and highlight the tar-colored streets, transforming the yellow lines from a mere divider into a bonafide path into the unknown. You follow the yellow lines.

Despite Global Warming's best efforts, winter is officially upon us, and this latest installment of The Bobkast was made with the transition of the seasons in mind.  And here's another "Inconvenient Truth": you will like this mix, despite knowing little about (or being aesthetically opposed to) 'electronic' music.  The tracks featured have a somewhat chilly vibe, but still provide enough warmth to get you tappin' your frozen toes and humming along to the melodies, and they come together to create a sound that can best be described as "indie-electronica."  So bundle up tight, put on some warm headphones, and pray for a snow day.

Enjoy 1. Feist- Inside and Out 2. Rilo Kiley- Breakin' Up 3. Beck- Tropicalia 4. Peter Bjorn & John- Let's Call the Whole Thing Off (Girl Talk Remix) 5. Super Furry Animals- Northern Lights 6.
